President Anwar El-Sadat of Egypt was assassinated during the annual military parade to commemorate Egypt’s crossing of the Suez Canal on 6 October 1973, at the beginning of the Yom Kippur War. The assassination was undertaken by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, lead by army Lieutenant Khalid El-Islambouli.
